New to post searing in chapter 1 - when to upgrade my armor?
I've just made it into post searing, and I have about 1500 gold or so, and a lot of crafting items.
Is it a good idea for me to upgrade my armor now (I've reached Fort Rank in one direction, and Piken Square in the other), or wait till I can get something better than 'AL30' sold in Ascalon?
None of the post-searing elementalist armor seems to look nice... so I guess its just a matter of finding one with good protection ony (but hey, that's what armor's for anyway).
In fact as I type this I'm standing in Fort Ranik trying to decide on the mission there, or working on my quests, or armor upgrade first...

You will find out that monsters will hit very hard as you travel to Nolian Academy or to Grenich Court House in Ascolon. If you can travel around without dying once, then stay with your current armor until you hit Yaks Bend (Shiverpeaks). I've been able to travel around quite well without getting any new ascolon armor, but if you are new to Tyria (in post searing), then you may want to look into new armor there.
The only hard mission (I think) is Althea's Ashes. You can do any quest with henchies without needing new armor (except Althea's). But once you get to Yaks, get new armor.
My suggestion is, complete whatever you can without new armor until you end up with missions/quests that you find very difficult to complete. If you feel that armor is the only thing that is preventing you from completing the mission/quest, then buy new armor. If you can do without, then wait until Yaks Bend.
Hope this helps.

Is there anybody in Yak's bend who makes better armor than Corwen in Ascalon?
I'd just get armor from him.
If you own Factions, you can get top level armor once you make it to Lions Arch, without the benefit of a Droks run, by bopping over to Cantha.

Or don't buy any armor and get some from the local collectors. Do a search for armor collectors on guildwiki (the site is down or I'd give a direct link) to find out where they are and what each collects.

You have to be ascended before traveling to Cantha.

Will I be able to take my existing characters in the new areas of the world? Do they keep their items, their levels, etc?
If you purchase Factions, you will be able to travel to the new land, Cantha, with your Ascended characters from Guild Wars (original Prophecies campaign). Inventory items, skills, and other possessions and attainments from Guild Wars remain yours and remain useable within Guild Wars Factions.

Back to the armor from the OP, looks like you are N/E. Then you should stay back and armor shouldn't be the biggest concern for you at the beginning of the game. I would save up and go to Beacon's Perch. Then, get a run to Droknar's Forge. There you can get the endgame armor.
There are several levels of armors in the game. Forge provides the highest, Ascalon is the lowest in post-searing.

Whoops.
Anyhow, IIRC, you have to get pretty far in the game before you can buy better armor than what Corwen makes right in Ascalon.
